British Values
We actively promote British Values to ensure that our children leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Children are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
The key values are: democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
British Values are the bedrock of our own values of Ready, Respectful, Safe.
Through our curriculum we promote these values ways which include:
Democracy:
- Teaching children how they can influence decision-making through a democratic process, such as the election of our School Council.
- Teaching children about 'democracy' in different periods of history.
- Helping children to express their views and offer opinions.
- Modelling how perceived injustice can be peacefully challenged, for example, applying our school behaviour system and through assemblies and PSHE lessons.
The Rule of Law
- Ensuring school rules and expectations are clear and fair by discussing them with pupils and establishing classroom rules with the pupils themselves.
- Helping pupils to distinguish right from wrong. For example, during everyday interactions and discussions of stories, fables and other literary materials.
- Helping pupils to respect the law and the basis on which it is made. For example, by showing how rules help everyone to interact in an orderly and fair manner and protect the vulnerable in society.
- Helping pupils to understand that living under the rule of law protects individuals.
Individual Liberty
- Supporting pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence through the careful design of the school curriculum.
- Encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour, as well as knowing their rights.
- Challenging stereotypes through SMSC/PHSE work and assemblies.
- Implementing a strong anti-bullying culture that means everyone is safe.
- Teaching children how to be safe and how to act safely.
Mutual Respect
Promoting positive relationships
- Learning about respect through all aspects of the curriculum, in particular, PSHE and RE.
- Having a positive reward system in place (House Points etc.) and celebrating achievements collectively and individually.
- Participation in events to raise money for charities.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
- Helping pupils to acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures and ways of life through our well-designed RE, PSHE and wider curriculum offer.
- Challenging prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.
- Organising visits to palaces of worship. For example, visits to local faith buildings.
