Design & Technology
Intent
At Southtown Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum is carefully designed to inspire and challenge all pupils to become innovative, creative thinkers and confident problem-solvers. We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of the design, make and evaluate cycle, fostering resilience, independence and reflective learning.
Our curriculum builds a clear progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary so that children can make purposeful choices when designing and creating. It supports pupils in understanding the impact of DT on our everyday lives and encourages them to become enterprising citizens equipped for future challenges.
This curriculum is adapted from the Kapow programme and enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets set out in the National Curriculum and reflects our school’s vision, values and development priorities.
Implementation
Learning in Design & Technology is delivered through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds skills and knowledge progressively from EYFS through to Year 6. Units follow the design, make and evaluate framework and include contexts such as mechanisms, structures, textiles and cooking and nutrition, ensuring breadth and depth of learning.
Staff use high-quality resources, including knowledge organisers and differentiated planning, to ensure lessons are engaging and accessible for all pupils.
Assessment is ongoing through formative checking and unit end quizzes to ensure pupils are mastering key concepts and skills.
Impact
The impact of our Design & Technology curriculum is seen in pupils’ ability to apply their knowledge and skills independently and creatively. Children develop a solid foundation of technical understanding and practical skills, enabling them to undertake meaningful and purposeful projects with confidence.
Pupils demonstrate a growing confidence in evaluating their own work and that of others using subject-specific vocabulary.
Progress is monitored against the National Curriculum attainment targets to ensure that learning builds year-on-year and that all pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Through this curriculum, pupils leave our school as resourceful, resilient and enterprising learners who are ready to contribute positively to society.
