Science

Intent

We aim for our science teaching to be rooted in practical, hands-on experiences to encourage curiosity and questioning. We encourage children to take the lead in their learning and find out for themselves what they are interested in. We believe that, by promoting the experience of exploring and investigating scientific phenomena in a range of contexts, we will enable children to evolve their knowledge and develop a range of core skills to equip them for an ever changing world.

Students are encouraged to consider their environment and how to be responsible for it. We aim to provide rich opportunities in science for children to become confident, life-long learners with the skills and motivation to explore and question the world around them.

Implementation

Children are taught a science curriculum as discrete weekly science lessons. The curriculum has been planned and developed so that scientific skills and knowledge are taught and built on across the primary age range to enable children to extend and deepen their understanding as they move through the school.

Pupils’ work and photos of science-related experiences are regularly displayed on a science display board in school and can also be shared on class pages of the school website or through Class Dojo in order that children can share and extend  their learning at home.

Educational visits, workshops and special visitors related to science are used to provide children with new experiences, raise questions and enhance their learning. This also raises their awareness of science beyond the classroom and promotes aspiration. A yearly science week is also planned to help develop a culture of science across the school.

Impact

Children’s books evidence a broad and balanced science curriculum. Children learn scientific skills and knowledge that  enable them to be ready for the next stage of their education. Also, children are able to use scientific vocabulary to explain their learning.  Children are able to make links to previous learning in Science.
